Sunan Giri is the name of one Walisongo and founder of the Giri Kedaton empire, based in Gresik, East Java. He was born in the year 1442 Balambangan. Sunan Giri has several nicknames, namely Raden Paku, Satmata King, Sultan Abdul Faqih, Raden Ainul Yaqin and Joko Samudra. He is buried in the village of Giri, Kebomas, Gresik.
Sunan Giri is the son of the marriage of Maulana Ishaq, a Muslim preacher from Central Asia, with Sekardadu Goddess, daughter of the ruler Sembuyu Menak Balambangan region at the end of the Majapahit period. But the birth is considered to have brought the curse of the plague in the region. So he forced his father to get rid of the new child’s birth, then Goddess Sekardadu willingly immerses children into the sea / strait bali .
Then, the baby was found by a crew (sailors) and taken to Gresik. In Gresik, he was adopted by a female merchant ship owners, Nyai Pinatih Gede. Because it was found at sea, she named the baby Joko Samudra.
When old enough, Joko Samudra brought his mother to Surabaya to study theology from Sunan Ampel. Shortly after teaching, Sunan Ampel to know the true identity of his favorite students. Then, send it to Sunan Ampel Makdhum Ibrahim (Sunan Bonang), to explore the teachings of Islam in Pasai. They were received by Maulana Ishaq’s father is none other than Joko Samudra. Here, Joko Samudra, who was named Raden Paku, knowing the origin and the reason why she had discarded.
After three years of studying with his father, Raden Paku or better known as Raden ‘Ainul Yaqin back to Java. He later founded an Islamic boarding school giri on a hill in the village Sidomukti, Kebomas. In the Java language, giri means mountain. Since then, he was known to the public as the Sunan Giri.
Pesantren Giri later became famous as a center spread of Islam in Java, even its influence to Madura, Lombok, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Maluku. Giri influence continues to grow until it became a small kingdom called Giri Kedaton, which controls Gresik and surrounding areas for several generations until finally overthrown by Sultan Agung.
There are several traditional Javanese art is often thought to be associated with Sunan Giri, including the games kids like Jelungan, Lir-ilir and Cublak Suweng; as well as some gending (instrumental song Java) as Asmaradana and Pucung.
